I know this is an easy topic, so nobody even tries to tackle it. It’s like playing Spider Solitaire on “one suit,” it just isn’t done… TOO EASY! Still, I’ve been reading a lot about privilege in my favorite blogs this week, and now that I’ve seen privilege rear its offensive head in feminist book publishings and the news I think it’s as good a time as any to shine the torch on video games: society’s pillbug-infested, unfinished basement of misogyny and racism.

I love trains. They’re fast, comfortable, and have a smaller carbon footprint than airplanes and passenger cars. In fact, “… Amtrak – on an energy consumed per-passenger-mile basis – is 18 percent more energy efficient than commercial airlines,” according to the Department of Energy.
I used to do the trip between New York and Boston a lot in school, and I always preferred the train to driving or the bus. I found it to be the most comfortable form of travel and the only one that I could sleep on. The airplane always cost too much for the trip, and any time saved was wasted at the security check. Trains also give us convenient, cost-effective intra-city travel. How could any 20-something in the NY area live without their precious Subway? For all these reasons and more, the US is having its first National Train Day this year on May 10. There will be events at the major train stations in New York, Washington, Chicago, L. A., and many other stations across the country.

Technology can sometimes look a little too black/white, glossy, and smooth for my taste. A lot of people seem to be taking their design cues from the iPod. Now the iPod looks fine, but I feel like Stevie’s mantra of simple, symmetric design is beginning to stagnate the look of technology. That’s why I’m a huge fan of steampunk. It’s refreshing to see the clunky, creative, and fun ways that people are giving things a new look, like the steampunked computer. And check out this little number: a steampunked Nerf Gun.

“Today there are more artists working in more genres, using more varieties of material, and moving among more geographic locations than ever before. “
-Whitney Biennial Website
That pretty much sums up this year’s Biennial. It’s like the flea market of contemporary art.

It’s been a colossally comedic week: if you’ve been paying attention to the Events page, you’ll know that Maria Bamford was at Comix (NYC: 14th street and 9th) Friday and Saturday and that Monday (also at Comix) was the Hysterical Festival featuring Heather Lawless of Variety SHAC!

I saw two shows out of Maria Bamford’s four-show lineup, officially making her my idol. Though Bamford takes top billing, Heather Lawless is certainly one of the top 5 comedians I most adore. If any of you out there want to see what I’m gushing about, check out Variety SHAC’s next show on May 1st at UCB: I’ll post a reminder when their tickets become RESERVABLE. Now then, I’ve got more comedians to show you. Step into my basement…
