TMBG Covers a Disney Song… From The Magic Kingdom?

Carousel of ProgressSome of you may know the ride “Carousel of Progress” at Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom. It’s a relic that was designed by Walt Disney for the 1964-1965 World’s Fair in New York. The ride follows a family through time as technology improves around them. The running theme of the ride is that technology keeps making our lives better, and one can obviously take issue with the Disney philosophy of utopia through technology. At the same time, I do like my gadgets and some optimism now and then.

In keeping with that theme, the song for “Carousel of Progress” is “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow”. You can hear a little bit of it on the page for the ride. Now most people know Disney for their songs in movies. You probably know a few of them. But the theme parks are also dripping with original (mostly bad) music. In my Disney geekiness, I know a lot of them. I even own a CD with many of the They Might be Giantstracks. So when They Might be Giants covered “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow”, I totally geeked out. You can listen to it now on their MySpace page. Apparently they did it for the soundtrack to the movie Meet the Robinsons (which probably sucked). I just can’t get over this marriage between two of my favorite things. If I ever hear their version on the ride, I may not be able to stop giggling. You can buy the song DRM-free at the Amazon MP3 store here.
